Oh man, reading that over again, I've got to apologize. That came off much more grouchy than I anticipated. Sorry, bro.
(In my defense, I'm currently taking a bitch of a statistics course that's been stressing me out due to my 90% average = C grade, because of the curve... anyways)

Anyways, still not an excuse to take it out on you... But I would like to point out there's a Spread Gun Falcon sitting in the vendor house right now...if anyone wants to buy it... hahaha

on: June 12, 2010, 11:05:10 AM 2 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Official Bugs Thread

There's got to be a way to balance the slot machine, eventually you'll get it I'm sure. But right now it's actually pretty terrible.
Sinking about 4k gold in, with no payout = lame, considering the chances of getting an R1 item are the same as an R5.
It kind of sucks because right now nobody really buys things from the vendor house (due to already having, iirc).

Again, I'm sure it will get balanced eventually. If the goal of the slot machine is to just be a money-pit, fine. But I'd even prefer it if you scrapped the money payout completely (since it's balls) and replaced it with something like a randomized R1 item. Then at least there's some incentive to sink the money in.

on: June 08, 2010, 05:35:39 PM 3 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Official Bugs Thread

I think it's a bit terrible, considering you have just as much chance of getting a crummy item as a rare one.

Yeah I think that game's been hanging by a tread for a while.

It's sad it's got such problems since it's fun.

on: May 25, 2010, 09:37:53 AM 5 Kokaro / Games / Re: Favorite Game?

Canyon Defense is a really solid TD game all in all. The Recycler gamebreaker aside, it's one of the most balanced I've seen; that only thing that would be nice is bigger maps or upgradeable towers.
(Canyon Defense, Mushroom Revolution, Bloons 3, and Creeper World are my favourite TD games ever).

I played amateur surgeon for an hour (59 minutes), and got a pretty excellent score (playing the game through without dying - ~250k).

100 gold. This should be higher, I think.

HOWEVER, if I'm reading this game right, the fact that it stores your cookies might have the potential to let someone who's already done well (score-wise) spam the game for gold...

I dunno, I kinda like the adjectival version. "Virtuous Sword" sounds cooler than "Sword of Virtue" to me. But... "Wand of Wealth" sounds better. Hmmm. Either way works for me, really.

Anyways, if you go to the enchanter and "sort rarity", it breaks all the item management links.

Just call me bug-hunter Jacq  8)

on: April 24, 2010, 09:57:31 AM 20 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Official Bugs Thread

I'm not sure I can explain this well, but the shop seems to be, uh, not really that random.
Slot 1 is cycling through the Ocarina of Time items, slot three is cycling Ultima items, and slot two seems to be a little more random but with an overabundance of DK items.
It might just be chance, but that odds of having Worlds Finest eyedrops, fertile dirt, jester hat, a banana, and the swordfish token all showing up two days in a row is quite the coincidence.

But if the market format is changing soon then I guess it will be a moot point then!

(PS: I see what you did to enchanted items last night. I'm pretty sure they didn't do anything at the moment anyways)

on: April 22, 2010, 10:32:27 AM 25 Kokaro / Games / Re: Balance Payout: Times, Scores & Pay

The Bunny Hopper payout is about 100 gold for anything on the high score table (50-60k points), but 20-30 gold for pretty low scores (around 10k). I think it should pay out more at the upper threshold, even if it pays less for bad runs.

on: April 22, 2010, 10:16:16 AM 26 Kokaro / Village / Re: Marketplace

That sounds like an excellent idea. I'm all for it.

(I totally just bought 3 Spread Gun Falcons there haha)

edit: I'm not sure it's intentional or not, but the slot machine loads the items currently in the marketplace. Seems a little off if it's  random generation.

on: April 20, 2010, 08:17:45 PM 28 Kokaro / Village / Re: Collection Agent

An avatar would be pretty awesome. Especially if it was unique to the set you returned. (Say, the doom avatar could be a Caco demon and the super mario world could be Yoshi or something.)

on: April 20, 2010, 08:07:58 PM 29 Kokaro / Village / Re: Collection Agent

This is kind of difficult.
I'm not a big fan of handing my items in, even if there's a gold reward. For one, if you get gold equal to the market's price when you sell an item (IE - ~1/4 of 'retail') it's not worth it at all. Also, by handing the items in, it means that I'm unable to hand in sets I've completed that contain enchanted items, because the NPC will either take the enchanted item (noooooooo!), or WON'T take the enchanted item and I'm stuck with them until I can find a replacement.

The latter is not a huge hairy deal, but the former is kind of frustrating, especially without weighting sets. Yes, you get points and a badge, but with the gold payout so trifling it makes sense NOT to collect a large set like Zelda, since you could spend that effort collecting doom guns 8 times and end up 'ahead'.

I see that allowing users to keep an item could encourage things like tandem collections, selling whole sets, other game-breaking things like that.

It looks a bit better now (I like the two BIG pictures with three little ones underneath.)
On my desktop (1680x1050), there's a LOT of unused space on the sides. It makes the middle part look more cluttered.

Hoooray for the random item feed to be back, though!

on: April 19, 2010, 04:29:38 PM 31 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Home Page Changes

What about... I'm not sure how the coding would work, but what about something like... The Librarian "research" one of your items. After a time period (or a fee, or both), he completes his research and will show you one (or more) items from the same set? I'm not sure there's a way for him to only display items not already in your inventory. If there isn't, the cost / number of items returned would have to be balanced with the chances of dud research - that is, if you have 13/15, the chances of 1 random item from the set being what you're looking for is low.

Did that make sense? If it can be done, it seems to balance the element of surprise with a collector's frustration.

Another thought would be for a fee he will tell you what item belongs to what number (like, Item #1 = triforce piece). That sort of breaks the fourth wall, though.

on: April 19, 2010, 02:32:35 PM 32 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Home Page Changes

I'm sad to see the random items go. It was the only place where you could see items you didn't have from an incomplete set.

I mentioned this to Scapegoat, but maybe an NPC that's like a Librarian, that will let you see the complete item list from a random set for a fee, or something similar?

First impressions of the "new look" aren't positive for me, but it could be I'm just not used to it. Particularily, viewing on a netbook monitor (haven't seen it on the desktop yet) I'm not a fan of the big white space between the "Kokaro is" and the site fee. The "two-column" thing, with games on one side and text on the other looks kind of weird, as well.

on: April 18, 2010, 10:37:09 PM 33 Kokaro / Games / Re: Dear Jacq

My Bloons score is after completing the game with, iirc, only two bloons getting past. Since I didn't get a perfect score, there's still potential for someone to beat me.
The biggest score boost comes from economy - buy only the items/upgrades you need to pass each level, so you can get your super monkey out asap.

It's a bit unfair in some ways, I'll admit. I played all three Bloons games and the super monkey game like mad a long time before they were added to Kokaro. I love Tower Defense. :D
(Except that Toytown one. The combo system is broken and I don't like moving towers.)

Notice anything a little... off about some of the games?

I made this topic because the collision physics in Breakout2 seem to be a little bit dodgy (my ball will go straight through a brick sometimes.)
Usually this has the effect of killing me dead, but sometimes it works out nicely when my ball passes through one of the "walls" and gets stuck in sweet brick oblivion. :)

Also in avalanche sometimes my little marshmallow gets stuck and then catapulted across the screen.

Due to the randomness of the platforms, sometimes in Bunny hopper there is nothing for me to land on right at the beginning. = score of 0  >:(

on: April 17, 2010, 11:27:54 AM 35 Kokaro / Games / Re: Balance Payout: Times, Scores & Pay

I agree that the Collapse payouts are a little off. It seems like there's not much payout difference between a bad score and a good one.

Not a bug, but there's a typo on the Slot Machine page. Should read "instinct".

on: April 16, 2010, 10:31:21 AM 38 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Suggestions?

I agree that the gold payouts are a little wacky for a lot of games, McPoop.
I would also like some input as to how people navigate around the page, the favorites is a tremendous help for shortcutting through all the games ... I also forget that the recent forum posts are on the home page since I think they're too far down.
Has anyone noticed that they have a long process for something simple? One I have that's being worked on is how I have to go through inventory in one tab to find doubled items, then in another tab go through enchanter - there's no page number shortcuts so it's easy to get lost and go back and forth a bunch.
If you click on an item, it will tell you if it's a double or not. "You currently have X of this item".

Navigation thoughts:
- The vendor house navigation is pretty clunky if you're trying to put up more than one item for sale.
- I'd like to see a "Random Game" option on the main "games" page.
- I like that the newer games are on the first page of "Games" now. Hooray.

on: April 16, 2010, 10:24:25 AM 39 Kokaro / Village / Re: Enchanter

Personally, I hate time-constrained events like that. I understand that they're effective from a psychological point of view, but I'm not really a daily player, and I hate the thought of being penalized for not being able to "keep up" and have a disadvantage against those that have the time to micromanage. If I want to ignore Kokaro for a week, and thenn go on a "binge" for a day, I want to be able to make the most of that day.
(There is bitterness from other web-based sites and MMOs here, I'll admit. I missed out on a Veemon egg from Digimon Battle because I didn't log in 27 days in a row :( )

Daily wheel I don't have a problem with, because it's not game-breaking in the same way an enchantment constraint is.

HOWEVER, the idea of a "stock count" or something in the shop seems like it would be internally consistant? Like, if the shopkeeper only had 5 of each item or something each restock... Hmmm... I don't really like that idea, though...

on: April 16, 2010, 10:09:20 AM 40 Kokaro / Village / Enchanter

Scapegoat and I were talking about how to keep the R1 items as common as their rarity is supposed to be indicative of. Here are two ideas I thought of, regarding the Enchanter:

1. If the enchanter transforms your item into another item, he should take 5% gold maybe, so you're not getting something for nothing and getting rid of low-level items without a bit of thought.

OR;

2. Instead of a 100% chance that, if your item is transmogrified it becomes a higher rank, maybe that could be tweaked a bit. So, for example, an R1 item might break down like this:
50% chance it changes to a different R1 item
50% chance it becomes an R2

An R2 item might have these odds:
50% chance it becomes a different R2
40% chance it becomes an R3
10% chance it becomes an R1. ("Oh crap I made it WORSE!")

Within this, there could be something like a 1% chance of an R1-3 items becoming an R5. On the other hand, I think it's important to not make the "negative" consequences TOO likely, because item transformation is already nested inside the other list of options (enchant, destroy, item, destroy+gold) that already carries quite negative consequences.

What do you think?

on: April 15, 2010, 09:24:16 PM 41 Kokaro / Site Discussion / Re: Official Bugs Thread

That "screen o' +10" only happens if you skip the loading screens. But after that first set it doesn't seem like there's any stars or bumpers afterwords = terrible score

ANYWAYS
Two bugs:
1. "Reserve for" seems to be breaking the Vendor items that aren't reserved for anyone.

2. Inventory Page is broken. (sizzling rice is crustulios left on the bottom of the pot that Chinese vendors pass off as delicious food, btw)

3. Not actually a bug, but I swear the slot machine only has about 8-9 "sets" of items it cycles through on the hour. I've NEVER seen an OoT item in it.

on: April 15, 2010, 09:16:36 PM 43 Kokaro / Barter Board / Re: Need Zelda items

Done and done. I think in future, since the items are reserved, it would make more sense to trade for 1 gold though.

on: April 14, 2010, 11:24:38 PM 44 Kokaro / Barter Board / Re: Need Zelda items

I am ridiculous! I misread the thread starter. Sorry Blackbird!
Okay things have changed a little bit for Zelda 2, I'm going to hold out and wait for the last 3 to complete the /14 set.

Items I have that you need (That I'm willing to trade ;) ):
Eyeball Frog (R4)
Giant Wallet (R3)
Silver gauntlets (R4)
~
Bow (R1)
Red Ring (R3)
Triforce Piece (R5)
Magic Sword (R5)
~
Hammer (R5)

Items I want:
Nightshade (R3)
~
1-up mushroom (R2)
Trampoline(R4)
Pocket chomp(R2)
Red shell(R2)
Blue pepper(R3)
Smash Egg (R4)
Ice Flower
Bro Flower
Copy Flower
That last item from this set
~
(items I have in complete sets but are enchanted, so I'm looking for replacements)
Spiritual Armour (R3)
Medium Coin (R3)
Rocket Engine (R3)
Melon (R3)
Mandrake Root (R3)

I'd rather trade items for rarity straight-across instead of coins. I'm afraid of the enchanter if I have more than about 3k.

on: April 02, 2010, 11:42:46 PM 45 Kokaro / Barter Board / Re: Need Zelda items

Gold as the weighted element is good. It didn't occur to me that it was used in the rankings. :D

I hardly ever sell things to the shopkeeper because the prices are too low. But I think enchanted items should definitely sell for lots higher, both because of their rarity and because selling to the shop removes them. I'm still not exactly pleased with having to give up the items, though. I'd be willing to forgo the gold payout to keep them in my inventory. But either way it falls will be fine.

Blackbird, I'd be willing to trade what you mentioned (Raft + Cross for Ice and Copy flowers), but I'd rather let drath have first dibs since he posted the topic. :)

Edit: I just found some Silver Gauntlets (R4).

edit 2: Derp, flowers are not a set in themselves. Also seeking:
1-up mushroom(R2)
Trampoline(R4)
mushroom(R1)
pocket chomp(R2)
red shell(R2)
blue pepper(R3)
And 2 others I haven't figured out yet.

on: March 30, 2010, 04:53:35 PM 46 Kokaro / Barter Board / Re: Need Zelda items

From what you're missing, I have:
Magic Container (R4)
Hammer x3 (R5)
Boots (R2)
Raft (R2)
Cross (R2)
(all from Zelda 2)
Also:
Magic Sword (R5)
Triforce Piece (R5)

I'd be willing to trade rarities for Nox Crystal (R4), Nightshade (R3) and Flowers (but not Mix flower).

I'm really torn about having to give up all the items. I have a lot of enchanted items that are part of complete sets, which means that I won't be able to give them to the NPC until I get doubles of those, and there's no guarantee the NPC won't take the enchanted item. :(

On the other hand, I currently have 4 complete sets (2 away from the Ultima set!) and the points WOULD give my rank a nice boost.

Would the collection badges be weighted? That is, since the Oot set has more than 6 times the items that the, uh, DoomGun set has, would it be worth more points?

(Thanks for unbanning me! :D )

It took about four tries to get this thread to load though.

Apparently I'm banned? For getting a score on a game lower than the highest? (The bunny game, I got 13xsomething. Lower than Blackbird's second even, I think.)

There's something a little odd with the cheat detection. Maybe it's not taking into account the option to restart in-game?

(assuming I get unbanned, does this mean I can no long rightclick -> restart on things like Alu's revenge to save having to load the flash again?)

Otherwise... aw man. :(

It's like 80% luck, like you said.

You should have seen my face when I got in the 713 range though. I almost died after I died.

Oh wait you fixed it. Nevermind...

The new logo is cute! That poor house is about to get taken out, though.

Which reminds me... What is the kokaro? (The green thing)... Is he, like, level 1 slime from every RPG ever?

PPS: I left you a present. It's over 2000.

Dear Goat;
I don't think you realize that the only game Andrew plays is Half Life Two. Ever.
However, I look forward to laughing at your feeble attempts to surpass me, to the tune of three coins jangling into my pocket for every defeat.

<3,
Jacq

PS: I covet your large coin.

Woo hoo! :D

I'm not sure how the storage side of it would work. I was thinking it might be as easy as the "games played" tally, but with a little more info (the equivalent of a counter). But when I think about it more, I can see how it would get way too big too fast.

Is there any advantage to collecting all the items in a set?
(Aside from my own OCD, of course)

I think it would be cool if we could see a breakdown of the games we play, or how often we play them. Like...
Jacq:
Mahjong Connect - 144 plays
Magnet Towers - 103 plays
etc.

Or even
Jacq's Favourite Games:
1. Avalanche
2. Bloons Tower Defence
3. Aquacubes.

Not really my style. I don't think I'll ever "get" the autotuner for anything but parody.

I don't have a favourite because I like them all! (except the shooting-at-things ones).

Magnet Towers, Avalance, and aquacubes are pretty awesome though.

Mahjong Tower.

I guess it's not officially a bug, but the scoring system for this game is a little bit odd. The scores for each board are not cumulative, so if you want to get a highscore, you're better off losing quickly at the end of the first board (which has the most tiles, as far as I can tell) than continuing to play the smaller but harder boards.

Thanks for putting a "real" mahjong game in, though. They are one of my favourites! :D

I'm Jacq. I like playing flash games when I'm supposed to studying. (I am a linguistics major in university, hopefully with a focus in phonotactics/audiology, but I need to keep my gpa up.)

I live in Cowtown, canada, and am very boring. The end.

I agree that spam should be kept to a minimum, but I like the idea of rewards for posting based on length and/or content as opposed to just "posts" - replying with a +1 isn't the same as having a real answer.
Personally I'm not a fan of any rep systems, but I know that a lot of people dig them so I won't complain.

Maybe in future there could be custom titles like "Grand Quester" or "Moneybags" or something (less lame) to denote users that are number 1 in some area?

I was wondering why the chat thing went kablooey.
It looks spiffy! Any chance of avatar support eventually?
